I'm fascinated by how systems work, particularly human-centered systems. I work to understand how the everyday interactions between people are aggregated into vast, complex, interrelated systems and what this means for the individuals involved. I use network analysis to understand these relationships, and try to make these systems work better for all involved.
I've had a varied career including studying anthropology, working as a surgeon and now I work as an academic in a mathematics department. In my work I try to bring all of this together to understand systems as a whole while not forgetting the individual experiences from which these systems arise.
I’m a Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow in the EPSRC Centre for Mathematics of Precision Healthcare at Imperial College London.
I aim to explore three pressing questions facing health systems across the world:
I apply the methods from the fields of in data science, economics, biostatistics and network analysis to explore healthcare in the National Health Service and internationally as a complex system, and in doing so empower patients, clinicians and policy makers to make informed decisions to improve how healthcare is delivered.
I’m fascinated by the delivery of healthcare in its broader societal context. I focuses on how the vast array of available health and social information may be harnessed to address health inequality in the United Kingdom and internationally.
I graduated from the University of Cambridge where he studied Anthropology and Clinical Medicine as a Windsor Bachelor Scholar at Emmanuel College. I began my clinical career as an Academic Foundation Programme doctor in London, before being appointed as an Academic Clinical Fellow in General Surgery at the Institute of Global Health Innovation at Imperial College London.
A general surgeon by training, I am a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons and hold a Masters in Public Health from Harvard University where I was a Kennedy Scholar. More recently I returned to Harvard University as a Visiting Fellow in Biostatistics with the Onnela Lab.
My doctoral thesis ‘The Power of Connections: Mapping the Behaviour of Healthcare Networks’, supervised by Professors Mauricio Barahona and Ara Darzi, applied network analysis and machine learning to understand health systems as networks produced by the everyday interactions between patients and care providers.
I have worked internationally with the United Nations, World Health Organization, Médecins du Monde and the Francois Xavier Bagnoud Centre for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University to document the human rights infringements across Europe that result from discriminatory health policies towards migrants. I currently serve as an advisor to the [Institute for the Future of Work] on the relationship between good work and good health. I am also a Scientific Advisor to the [Helix Centre for Design in Healthcare] where he examines how the generation, synthesis and utilisation of clinical guidance affects patient care.
I work with colleagues in a range of clinical and academic disciplines, and as such, a chronological list of my publications would be filled with papers that appear unimportant or irrelevant to some, but quite the opposite to others. I've tried to group my papers into categories that make most sense to me, but there is inevitably a degree of overlap between them.
